Encouraging Alternative Energy Transition, PT Semen Gresik Presses Thermal Substitution Rate
Rembang, November 21st, 2024 – PT Semen Gresik, which is a subsidiary of PT Semen Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, recorded a significant achievement in environmental sustainability efforts by successfully increasing the use of alternative energy or alternative fuel for thermal energy substitution or Thermal Substitution Rate (TSR) by 2% per October in 2024.
With this, the company is consistent in its efforts to shift most of its energy needs from fossil fuels to more environmentally friendly energy sources, such as biomass, hazardous waste, and solar power.
“Currently, the company utilizes waste such as rice husks, corn cobs, used oil, used magazines, used PPU filters, plastic waste, medical waste, and leather bag waste. In addition, there are also 30 solar cell panels or Solar Power Plant (PLTS) with a total capacity of 14.55 kWp (kilowatt peak),” explained Senior Manager of Communication & CSR of PT Semen Gresik, Sulistyono.
“By substituting the main fuel through alternative fuels, the company is trying to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air emissions, and energy efficiency,” he said.
In addition to focusing on thermal energy, it also recorded a significant reduction in electricity use. In 2022, electricity consumption was recorded at 86.05 kWh per ton of cement. This figure was successfully reduced to 78.79 kWh per ton of cement in 2023. This decrease shows the energy efficiency that the company continues to optimize.
“This step is clear evidence that the company seriously supports the use of new renewable energy which not only contributes to the sustainability of the company, but also has a positive impact on the environment and the wider community,” he said.
By doing so, the company supports the national target to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2060, while also strengthening the role of the industrial sector in facing the challenges of climate change
